Pastor David’s Corner- Takeover! (Sammi’s Corner)

Here’s the second part of last week’s history lesson, as promised! (If you missed part one, go back to last week and check it out before reading this part!)
Part 2:
Our fun fact this week is that the 12 Days of Christmas song was actually not originally published as a song at all! The extended lyrics and tune that we are familiar with today were actually added about 130 years later! It was first created as a rhyme or a chant, similar to nursery rhymes that we’d teach to our children today, except this one had a VERY important purpose!
This rhyme came to be at a time in history when monarchies decided which religion their followers would be, and those with differing beliefs would be put in prison, tortured, or even killed. At that time, while Christianity was the decided-upon religion, denominational differences were not allowed. All people at that time were mandated to be protestant, meaning that being Catholic or Orthodox was not allowed according to the government, despite also being branches of Christianity. The practitioners of these Christian denominations were forced to convert or to practice their faith in secret.
Those who chose the latter actually used this rhyme to help provide a religious education to their children so they could explain the story of the Bible through the lens of their own belief system. It was often taught by a parent to a child in the form of a memory game, to teach them, in a covert way, the important points of their faith. For example, the two Turtle Doves represented the Old and New Testament, the five golden rings represented the Pentateuch, the 12 drummers drumming represented the Apostles’ Creed, and so on!
As time went on, this rhyme was picked up in Protestant circles as well, and eventually it became simply a useful memory tool to teach all types of children about the Christian faith, regardless of their parents’ denominational affiliation.
Thankfully, we do not currently face religious persecution today, with no need to create gift-related code names for our faith, but the items listed in this song can still act as a wonderful reminder that our faith is a GIFT! Each piece of Scripture is written down for us, from God with love. The 10 Commandments are a gift, The Gospel accounts are a gift, all of it is a gift! Ironically, this song, originally meant to speak in code, loudly tells us of the plainest truth of all- the greatest gift is, was, and always will be Jesus, our partridge in a pear tree.
