Pastor David’s Corner

Our Social Principles The Social Principles are how United Methodist put their faith into action. During the Month of August the following principles will be address in worship to help us better understand how we live our faith as followers of Jesus. Themes include: The Natural World The Nurturing Community The Social Community The Political Community
Taking an active stance in society is nothing new for followers of John Wesley. He set the example for us to combine personal and social piety. Ever since predecessor churches to United Methodism flourished in the United States, we have been known as a denomination involved with people’s lives, with political and social struggles, having local to international mission implications. Such involvement is an expression of the personal change we experience in our baptism and conversion.
The United Methodist Church believes God’s love for the world is an active and engaged love, a love seeking justice and liberty. We cannot just be observers. So we care enough about people’s lives to risk interpreting God’s love, to take a stand, to call each of us into a response, no matter how controversial or complex. The church helps us think and act out of a faith perspective, not just respond to all the other ‘mind-makers-up’ that exist in our society.”

Ron Rhode Retirement

Dear Members and Friends of First Church,
Ron Rhode is retiring from Music Ministry!
After decades of service to the local church, Ron Rhode has decided to hang up the keys and enjoy civilian life. Ron has served several churches in the Phoenix area since he moved here in 1973, including First United Methodist Church of Gilbert, Church of the Beatitudes (and the Beatitudes Campus), and finally First United Methodist Church of Phoenix.
Ron is most well-known as a theatre organist. Having given concerts internationally, Ron has played virtually every major theatre organ in the world. He was the Associate Organist at Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa for over 25 years, and many have heard him accompany the “Silent Sundays” film series at the Orpheum Theatre.
Ron’s final service will be Sunday, August 31st. There will be a casual reception after the 11 AM service, during which we can express our love and appreciation to him, and honor his service with gifts as you choose.
For the past 10 years, First Church has been blessed beyond measure by Ron’s musical talents. We are honored to be his final post. We will miss him dearly.
With much love and gratitude,
Joshua Ian Elder, Minister of Music

You may recall that the Desert Southwest Conference set a mission’s project goal of raising $30,000 dollars in order to help combat hunger in the Las Vegas area, admitting it felt like a lofty goal. But they are pleased to announce that $32,596 have been raised and donated to seven different food pantries in the area to help tackle the issue of hunger head on. Thank you to anyone from our church who helped support their project.
